More Control of Spending
By retaining fiscal responsibility, city governments are more attuned to the specific needs of their communities. They are in a better position to assess the actual needs of the community and prioritize spending to meet those needs. Interested parties within the city tend to be less diverse in the array of projects that they lobby for and there is more consensus on where the money is spent.
Currently, Punta Gorda's taxation rate is slightly lower than that of out-county, providing further disincentives to investing in Port Charlotte. Without gaining direct access to revenues and control of spending we will see further declines in Port Charlotte. With the CRA (Community Reinvestment Act), Charlotte Harbor is expected grow and home prices to rise. Both North Port and Punta Gorda (incorporated cities) have a higher rise in home prices than Port Charlotte. All the growth that is surrounding us, will only speed our decline if we do not incorporate and take control of our future.
